7 Talking Points

Bristol Rovers slotted 6 past Northampton at Sixfields Stadium on Saturday. Billy Bodin scored against his former club to give Rovers a deserved lead at half-time, before the floodgates opened in the second half. It was only Rovers’ second away league win of the season and their goal difference, now at 0, tells the story of how their season is going. Now League One’s top scorers, if they can stop conceding goals they will be pushing for promotion in no time.

Doncaster Rovers took all three points at home for the first time in 6 months after a 10-minute hat-trick from Ben Whiteman. Southend took the lead through Anthony Wordsworth, who was lucky to be on the pitch after kicking  Jordan Houghton in the back. But the Sheffield United loanee struck three goals in the second half to help Rovers to a 4-1 win.

Exeter went top of League Two after picking up a 1-0 win on their travels to Carlisle. A header just after half-time by Pierce Sweeney was enough to secure victory for the Grecians, who had lost their previous two meetings at Brunton Park.

Notts County scored a 96th-minute equaliser through Robert Milsom to earn a point against Forest Green Rovers. It would have been an unlikely victory for Rovers, who moved up to third from bottom in league Two, while Notts County were leapfrogged by Exeter. It was a frustrating afternoon for Kevin Nolan’s side with Shola Ameobi missing the best chance of the game, heading his effort wide.

Torquay showed what looked like the very beginnings of a turnaround last week when they bean Maidenhead 4-0 in their first win of the season. But it was back to usual business this week when Dover came away 2-0 victors. Torquay still sit bottom of the National League with just one win from their opening 15 games, and look doomed for relegation unless something changes fast.

England have officially qualified for the World Cup after wins against Slovenia and Lithuania. Two 1-0 victories and two goals from Harry Kane was all that was required, but should we expect more? The performances were perhaps uninspired, but England only conceded one goal from open play in 15 hours of qualifiers. Meanwhile Scotland crashed out after being held to 2-2 draw by Slovenia. and Wales and Ireland face-off tonight with everything on the line.

Mohamed Salah sent Egypt to their first World Cup in 28 years with a 95th-minute penalty against Congo. Salah put the Pharaohs ahead after the hour, only for Arnold Bouka Moutou to equalise with 3 minutes left. But the Liverpool man converted his penalty with just seconds to spare to confirm his and his nation’s ticket to Russia.
