Ledley's Talking Points: Late Drama, Six-Nillers and Goal of the Season Contenders
7 Talking Points
Aguero’s hat-trick against Newcastle on Saturday took his tally to 20 goals for a fifth successive campaign despite missing five games through injury. His season has been something of a mixed bag so far, but he’s now just nine goals away from becoming the first City player to reach 200 goals, and he appears to be back to his best after dismantling Newcastle at the Etihad.
Chelsea put in a dominant performance at Brighton in the early kick-off on Saturday. After opening the scoring through Hazard, Chelsea followed up with a goal of the season contender. Fluid passing, a backheel pass from Batshuayi and a curving, driven effort from Willian that rippled the back of the net. The best team goal the Premier League has seen since Jack Wilshire vs Norwich in 2013.
Eriksen was missed by Spurs on Sunday in a 1-1 draw with Southampton. The Dane was sidelined due to illness and his presence was clearly missed. It’s his creativity and timing that often makes Spurs tick, and although Kane grabs most of the headlines with his sharpshooting, Eriksen is one of the key cogs in Pochettino’s system.
Leeds brought their tie with Millwall back from 2-0 down to 3-2 in the second half at Elland Road. It had gone from bad to great for Leeds, but an 87th-minute equaliser from Tom Elliot followed by a winner from Jed Wallace in injury time tipped the scales back towards heartbreak for the home fans. It was Millwall’s first away win of the season.
Nottingham Forest won their first game in seven to put an abrupt end to Wolves’ unbeaten run. Wolves can take comfort in the fact they are still nine points clear at the top of the Championship, tasting defeat for the first time since mid-August. Forest manager Aitor Karanka has now won his last five matches against Wolves as a manager.
Fulham stuck six goals past Burton to send them to the foot of the table and extend their own unbeaten run to seven games. Ryan Sessegnon and Rocha Fonte both bagged a brace, with goals from Piazon and Aboubakar Kamara capping off a miserable afternoon for the Brewers.
AFC Fylde also netted six in a stunning victory against the National League leaders Macclesfield Town. The Coasters continue their good form and climb up to ninth, while Macc remain top by three points. At the other end of the table, Torquay were thrashed 4-0 and are now eight games without a win and 11 points from safety.
The Legends netted 84 points this week, but did not make the top 30 in a high scoring week. Titus Bramble bagged an impressive 21 points, while Jermaine Jenas grabbed 18. None of the boys earned fewer than 13 points.
