Ledley's Talking Points

Sergio Aguero netted his 200th Man City goal as the Champions began the new campaign just as they left off. It was a comfortable victory for Pep Guardiola who said his side were starving for more success, while Sarri knows there is work to be done and it will take time for his approach to be pay dividends at Chelsea.

West Brom tasted open day defeat at the hands of Bolton in the Championship on Saturday afternoon. Yanic Wildschut tapped in from close range in the last minute of normal time to clinch all three points for the Trotters, who narrowly avoided relegation on the final day last season. It was a sobering result for Darren Moore’s side.

Middlesbrough were two goals down to Millwall in the 86th minute of their opening day tie, but a late surge saw them pull one back through Martin Braithwaite before George Friend came through with an equaliser in the seventh minute of stoppage time. Despite the late comeback, Tony Pulis admitted his side were not good enough to earn promotion unless they bring in players.

Leeds were comfortable winners at Elland Road as they faced the pre-season Championship favourites. “It's a massive wake-up call,” admitted Stoke captain Ryan Shawcross, while Leeds, who started the season with a new manager for the eighth successive year, were deserved winners.

Sunderland’s road back to the Premier League will be a marathon, but they got their league on campaign off to a winning start after trailing to a Charlton penalty in the opening 10 minutes. The Black Cats leveled through Josh Maja midway through the second half but it took more late drama and a 96th-minute header from Lynden Gooch to complete the comeback.

Michael Doughty scored two penalties deep into injury time to complete his hat-trick and ruin Macclesfield’s first game back in the football league after a six-year absence. Swindon were trailing in the 95th minute before the late drama unfolded and they left the County Ground with all three points.

Crewe were the opening day’s biggest winners, crushing Morecambe with an emphatic 6-0 victory. It was the Railwaymen’s first opening day win at home since 2007, and they naturally head to the top of the League Two table. The clean sheet will be one of the best takeaway for Crewe, as only two teams conceded more goals in the league last season.
