Weekly Winning Predictions: Matchweek 16
The search is on for a banana skin outside Valley Parade as Bradford surprisingly slipped up at home to Plymouth in what looked like the weekend’s biggest banker. That win lifted Plymouth off the foot of the League One table and wasn’t great preparation for Bradford’s tricky game at second-placed Wigan this weekend.
Elsewhere in League One, there were five goals in 34 second-half minutes between Blackpool and Portsmouth, with the latter taking three points with them on their long journey to the South coast thanks to a Brett Pitman winner.
Our sure draw prediction last week was Bury v Gillingham and it finished 1-1, so if you took our advice there – you’re welcome. If you instead went for another of our draw picks – Carlisle v Yeovil – we’re sorry. Carlisle ran out 4-0 winners thanks in part to two goals from Danny Grainger, including a sublime 30-yarder.
If you found last week’s picks tricky, you’ll be as happy as we are that the Premier League, Championship and SPL return on Saturday afternoon. There are some huge games too including the North London derby between Arsenal and Spurs and a reuniting of old foes in Man United v Newcastle.
This Week’s Win Predictions
Liverpool v Southampton
Liverpool have conceded just once at Anfield this season and they’re yet to lose as hosts in the Premier League too. Mo Salah is The Red’s danger man having already notched 12 goals in 17 games this term. That’s a better goals per game ratio than Liverpool heroes Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez managed in the same number of matches and ought to be enough to have The Saints quaking in their boots.
Burton v Sheffield United
Burton have lost their last four at home and their defence has shipped 18 goals in their own back yard this season – more than any other Championship side. Their opponents have had mixed fortunes on the road but looked formidable in their 4-1 demolition of Hull two weekends ago. Leon Clarke notched all four for the Blades that day and will be looking to continue his rich vain of form.
Manchester United v Newcastle
Ever since the 1995-96 season, when Newcastle were pipped to the Premier League title by United on the final day, this fixture’s had a little bit of added bite. It’s likely that this weekend will be no different as two old enemies Jose Mourinho and Rafa Benitez go head-to-head.
Going into Sunday’s game, Mourinho’s team are on the back of five straight Premier League wins at Old Trafford. Newcastle haven’t beaten Man United since December 2013 and the home side are unbeaten in the last five fixtures between the two teams: it looks like Mourinho may be the happier of the two managers come Sunday evening.
Sure Winner Prediction This Week
Hibernian v St. Johnstone
It’s tight at the top of the league and third-placed Hibs will be desperate to keep their foot on the gas. They are currently the form team in the SPL having chalked up four successive wins. St. Johnstone, on the other hand, have lost their last four away from home and took a 0-4 whipping from SPL top boys Celtic in their last league game.
Wildcard Win Prediction
Plymouth v Oxford United
Plymouth had an abysmal start to the season and are currently one place off the foot of the League One table. However, The Pilgrims are now unbeaten in five and are beginning to turn their fortunes around following their shock win over Bradford last weekend. Oxford United travel to Home Park after back to back League One losses and their play-off chase looks to be on the slide.
